Pop Culture this week: slip in best TV shows, CDs and movies
I had a busy week, but I still managed to slip in several TV shows, CDs and things. Take a look at my favorites, then tell me yours:
Best TV show I saw: How I Met Your Mother. This series really has been on a roll since the writers’ strike, and the Barney-centric ep managed to top Britney’s much-publicized appearance. Now it has me cheering for a Robin-Barney storyline, and I never thought that day would come!
I also enjoyed: R.E.M.’s appearance on Colbert (with the big stool!), Human Giant, Top Chef.
Sort of related: That Bjork video made my week.
And also: Am I the only person who just isn’t into The Riches this season? I liked it last year, but I think I’ve crossed it off my must-see list.
Best CD I heard: Sadly, I haven’t had time to go buy Accelerate. Instead, this week I’ve been playing the new Raconteurs disc nonstop. Favorite song: You Don’t Understand Me (track 3).
I’m also enjoying: I got a copy of the new Tapes ‘N Tapes record, Walk It Off, and I really like it. You can stream it now. I also like the upcoming Submarines album, which I play in this week’s podcast. And my husband is all about Howlin Rain right now, so he introduced me to that record. We’ve also been listening to The Flying Burrito Bros’ The Gilded Palace of Sin/Burrito Deluxe, just because Gram is always fun to sing along with in the car.
Also, I must give a shout-out to Pop reader Danny L., who suggested I listen to his favorite podcast (next to mine, I hope), Dallas Does Indie. I’ve been listening, and it’s really good. The latest episode is a throwback to ’90s indie bands and includes tracks from Pavement, Built to Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel, Modest Mouse, The Lemonheads and tons of others. Check it out.
Best book I read: I always get so excited when a new issue of Alec Longstreth’s PHASE 7 comes in the mail. His new one, No. 13, is pretty incredible — it takes you through centuries of art history in a 24-page comic! I laughed, I learned, I loved. Go here to read a preview, and go here to buy it for $4.
I’m also reading: I’m really enjoying Michael Chabon’s Maps and Legends, which is a new book of non-fiction essays published by McSweeney’s. Last night I read a piece he wrote about the death of comics genius Will Eisner. Honestly, I get so much pleasure from reading Chabon’s words that I need to read even more of his books. Each time I hang out with his work, I feel like I’m a better person for it.
Best movie I saw: Paranoid Park. This is Gus Van Sant’s latest drama that involves skateboarding and murder. Skater/first-time actor Gabe Nevins does an admirable job in the lead role.
I also watched: Across the Universe, which wasn’t my scene; Zero Effect, which I really dug and came out 10 years ago.
OK, your turn — share your picks for the week in the comments, and we just might steal ‘em this weekend.
