Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2: which game shall we buy?

Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2: which game should we buy? Guitar Hero World Tour vs Rock Band 2, this debate has gone so far, so far. Guitar Hero World Tour has only 41 licensed tracks for sale so far. While Guitar Hero’s online library of licensed content is far behind Rock Band’s. Music video games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band online aren’t exactly a dime a dozen, but seeing their great success, many publishers are now looking to jump on the rhythm bandwagon.

Xbox 360 revolution Lips: Battle of the Bands – the latest from publisher THQ and developer Planet Moon Studios – isn’t quite in the same league as the two smash hits. Although not a bad game, it’s more like a local cover band to Guitar Hero’s premier, world-touring rock star – and like any run-of-the-mill cover band, Battle of the Bands is likely best relegated to frat parties and dusty dives.

This fall/holiday seasons is going to be a monster for the rhythm based music games.  Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both cause some hurt to wallets and cause indecision on what to buy.  On top of all this Konami is planning on releasing “Rock Revolution” this year as well.

After the release of Rock Band 2 last year Activision and Guitar Hero had to fire back and go all out with instruments and a microphone to even the playing field.  Now they are quite similar though there are still some key differences.  So that brings me to the question, what should you or even myself buy?

I don’t own Rock Band 2 yet, though I do own Guitar Hero 3.  That is something I will have to take into consideration when weighing my choices on which to choose.  I am not going to buy both as I see no point in two sets of instruments taking up that much space.

Let’s take a look at some of the key features of each:

Guitar Hero World Tour

Pros:
- Track creation mode for beginners and high end users alike
- 3 drums, 2 cymbals
- Quieter than RB drums, also pressure sensitive drum pads
- Compatible with GH
- New guitar with touchpad keys
- All characters from GH2 & 3, plus new real rock stars
- Massive custom character & instrument creator
- Online & offline band career mode
- Room for 100 custom tracks, can download 200 custom tracks and upload five at a time
- Set list including Van Halen, Linkin Park, Sublime, Foo Fighters, Billy Idol (over 85 songs)

Cons:
- Creation lacks ability to use vocals
- Not compatible with Rock Band
- GH3 downloadable songs not compatible with GHWT
- GH3 DLC came in a slow stream, will it improve for GHWT?

Rock Band 2

Pros:
- Downloadable content is backwards compatible
- Improved instruments, less noise
- Old RB instruments will work with RB2
- Rumored Band World Tour online
- Massive library of DLC already, 156 songs
- Rumored solo mode for various instruments
- Full album downloadable content
- Rumored songs include Cheap Trick, Megadeath, System of  Down, Linkin Park, (at least 80 songs)

Cons:
- No user created track mode
- No confirmation of wireless 360 guitars (yet)
- Delayed release for PS2/PS3/Wii, 360 first, others later

Some of the Rock Band 2 details are still a bit skimpy as it was just announced and is supposed to previewed at E3 next week.  I will probably revisit this later on in the year when the final details are out.  On a side note both new games promise to deliver all master recordings.

So with all this being said, what should we choose?  It seems for people who own Rock Band, thanks to the DLC at backwards compatible instruments may want to stick with Rock Band 2.  That is unless you really, really want the user creation mode on GH World Tour.

If you don’t own Rock Band the choice probably comes down to the massive DLC catalog for Rock Band, or your desire for the user creation mode.  Or you could have a GH3 guitar you want to use with Guitar Hero World Tour.

We haven’t seen the new Rock Band 2 drum kit yet, but they have their work cut out for them after seeing the GHWT kit featured at the top of this blog which looks amazing.

Personally I am leaning towards Guitar Hero World Tour at this point unless some incredible DLC is shown/promised/released by then; say some Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc.  None of the current Rock Band DLC seems like must haves for me at this point, and I already own a GH3 guitar which I could use with World Tour.

Much of all this debate could be tossed out of the window if both of these companies would bury the hatchet and allow their instruments to work on each others’ game.  The big money isn’t made off of the instruments, it is off of the games, and the downloadable content.  If these were compatible you could be free to get DLC from which ever game you wanted, buy one music set, and buy the other solo game increasing each company’s sales.

It could all change between now and then.  Rock Band 2 is set for a Sept. 30th release on the 360.  World Tour should be out in October according to current rumors.  I will keep you cats posted with updates in regards to either game and help point out details which may help you choose one or the other for those who can’t or won’t pick up both.

Well you could in theory upload copyrighted music, though I am not sure how Activision will deal with that.  I would imagine music labels wouldn’t be too thrilled with that. Plus there is the lack of vocals, but we all know most of us play for the drums and guitar.

Who gives a about the Rock Band DLC when you can put it on guitar hero yourself?

If you want to play Rock Band 2, just turn your GH down to medium.

I suspect people will either create insane tracks that make TTFAF easy or they will make damn easy songs that everyone can FC.

99% of the upload content will be trash, but its a question wether the 1% of good quality tracks outweigh the RB DLC.

I also suspect that there won’t be an ability to upload MP3’s with the chart, and that all you will get is a generic midi over the top. Don’t expect the user creation to be crash hot (however I could be wrong).

I’ll be getting Both, however as Rock Band hasnt even been released here yet and GH games are usually only a month late, I think i’ll be getting RB2 sometime in 2010. I really wish I was kidding  At this point i wouldnt be suprised if i picked up GH4 before RB1.

Also keep in mind that GH3 was alot more difficult than RB, and really appeals to those cutting edge players that want a challenge. I think they will continue along this path, while RB will most likely appeal to the casual player.

Weren’t there a lot of problems with the RB equipment?  Of the people I know who have RB, none of them have a set of working equipment anymore (shipped bad guitar, broken drum pedal etc).  As such, I would think people would be leaning towards GH.

I haven’t had any problems with my equipment.  I bought GH3 and RB and I promptly sold GH3.  I kept the guitar to use with RB because RB only shipped with 1 guitar, but I have a group that plays and we use the RB guitar, drums and mic with no problems.

I bought GH 1 – 3, but after seeing 3 I won’t be buying any more GH games.  1 & 2 were good because of Harmonix, Activision did its best to ruin the series.

“It seems for people who own Rock Band, thanks to the DLC and backwards compatible instruments may want to stick with Rock Band 2.  That is unless you really, really want the user creation mode on GH World Tour.”

For me, this right here sums it up. I have Rock Band and don’t care for the user creation. Why? Well have you ever played a user created song? I have, and can’t stand them. For one instance, I was playing a fan made chart  in Frets on Fire. There was a somewhat fast part, not that hard, but the charter decided to make me strum as fast as humanly possible, even though what was playing in the song was incredibly slower than what I was being forced to do.

These arent going do be the developers making the songs, these will be the fans, and the fans don’t have the expertise to chart. In Frets on Fire fanmades there are many instances where I’m putting my finger on a lower fret for a higher note, there are instances where I miss the notes because the timings off by a second or two. There are instances where a song that in theory wouldve been awesome, sucked because it was charted horribly.

Guitar Hero 4’s fanmade songs are going to suck, and you’d know that if youve played a fan made before.

Activision lost MAJOR respect from me when I found out that the next major installment would be a ripoff of Harmonix’s Rock Band… I don’t plan on getting GH4, and am really looking forward to RB2.

I’m going to have to go with Guitar Hero for the better overall song list, but it’s not so clear cut as I’d like to think. Both games have solid track lists, both with the same amount of songs I’d be excited to play with, but breaking it down, it’s a tough call.

Both games have some Interpol, which I really do enjoy, but PDA (found in Rock Band) isn’t the band’s strongest song. On the other hand, Guitar Hero has Obstacle 1, easily my favorite from these New York crooners. Both games have some Beastie Boys, and while No Sleep Till Brooklyn is an amazing song, I’d much rather be treated to So Whatcha Want, so I gotta give the nod to Rock Band on that one.

Some of the tracks that you’ll find on one game, but not the other really have me torn. Rock Band’s selections of Rage Against the Machine’s Testify and The Who’s Pinball Wizard bring back some fond memroies, but I have to go with Guitar Hero as far as this goes. It has No Doubt’s Spiderwebs, and though it’s not one of my favorite songs, it certainly does make me nostalgic for when I was in high school, and I’d be more than willing to jump in on this track. Most importantly, Guitar Hero has one of the best songs ever written in CCR’s Up Around the Bend.

If that’s not enough, let’s look at the stand-out stinkers that each game has. Guitar Hero has a track from Paramore — oof. However, Rock Band is sporting tunes from Paramore, Panic at the Disco AND The Donnas. Pee-yew! Point Guitar Hero!

Guitar Hero Wii Not Online at Launch

Red Octane still working on specifics with Nintendo.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock may very well feature online play on Wii, it just won’t be there at launch. In an interview with Pro-G, Red Octane confirmed only the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions would feature online multiplayer, while the company worked out the details of incorporating similar features into the Wii version down the line.
“There won’t be online initially for the Wii,” said. Red Octane President and co-founder Kai Huang, “but we are working with Nintendo to see how we can get those features in.”

Under a possible deal that could be worth several million dollars, users could put their air guitar to use while listening to The Beatles and playing Activision’s Guitar Hero or MTV’s Rock Band games, according to the report.
