Drag race, mow down pedestrians, recover your buddy’s heroin, take in a gentleman’s club, take down some flying rats, and, of course, shoot lots and lots of guns. Sigh. It’s just another day in fictional Liberty City.
Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest in the 11-year-old video game series, went on sale Tuesday, causing a minor earthquake in an industry where the fans know their stuff — and want more of it.
This installment features shadowy Serbian War veteran Niko Bellic, who arrives in Liberty City (pretty much New York) to shoot his way to the American dream.
“The game looks really good, it even has a cinematic quality,” said Zachary Noel, 18, of West Palm Beach.
The game is chock full of Sopranos-like characters who rattle off pitch-perfect one liners — which are not always G-rated.
Bellic even comes equipped with a conflicted side.
“The creature that could do this, doesn’t have a soul,” he says while aiming his rifle at his next target.
The game is expected to rake in as much as $450 million by the end of the year. Locally, three dozen people pre-ordered copies of the game at the Best Buy on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Another ten lined up at dawn just to buy the game on its release day. But mid-afternoon, the Wal-Mart on Military Trail and Belvedere was sold out.
“It’s been hyped for weeks,” said Joey Madigan, a manager at Best Buy.
The first Grand Theft Auto was released in 1997, and a phenomenon was born. Each release since then has caused one stir or another. In fact, Grand Theft Auto III contained a sneaky little mini-game whose goal was to correctly execute a series of Lothario-type maneuvers. Congress was not amused.
Grand Theft Auto IV is rated M for Mature for violence, blood, language, sexual content, partial nudity, and use of drugs and alcohol.
“It is a violent game, it’s rated M for a reason,” Noel said, adding he wouldn’t let anyone under 13 play it. “It has cursing, it has guns, but as far as sexual content — that’s nothing you won’t see on prime time TV.”
But, he said, it’s also a game where a person chooses the amount of violence happening on screen. Perhaps you are just happy drag racing. Or “you can gun down everyone you meet,” Noel said.
He said he’s also a fan of the game’s “extras,” which include television programs, assassination missions, dart games, and the aforementioned rats. In fact, he said, it might be a little overwhelming for the gaming novice.
“There’s lots of stuff to do and see,” he said. “You could explore an entire city. Whatever you want. It could keep you busy for days, weeks, months.”
